Under Water Mermaids Using Motion Capture

Hey there,
Two Door FX just finished the first under water motion capture shoot ever.
Brad Fuller, the producer/director, was generous enough to let us use his home/pool for the shoot.
We shot with 2 red Cams at 3k resolution with varying frame rates (24) and 60 FPS. The clients (Falcon Tree House) were very nice guys with a tremendous vision and scope.
The motion capture was done by triangulating the two cameras and using a new Real Time rotoscope technology, in combination with tracking markers.

Stay tuned for more details coming up

My name is Diego Torroija, and I'd like to introduce myself and contribute to your group.
I am an FX Supervisor, working everywhere, with lots of motion graphics
experience. I have been doing visual effects and motion graphics work for over 12 years with the best in the industry.

Visual Effects Design & Planning:

Where do I begin? We encourage our clients to come to us in the development phase of their project so that we can open their mind to the possibilities available to them, inspire them with examples, explain to them what’s involved in creating the effects they need so they can make accurate budgets and production schedules, and often times show them how they can save money without cutting quality. (For e.g. not having to build expensive sets that would be easy for us to create in CG, in the Titanic only half the ship was real etc.) We are always open to helping clients with their technical questions and research.

Motion & Broadcast Graphics:

Motion & Broadcast graphics are used for just about everything now. There is not a television show or a film that opens with out them. (e.g. Fox News – the logo is spinning in a box in a clever way, Dreamworks with the guy fishing on a cloud, MGM had the lion logo and eventually turned it into a motion graphic where the Lion is now real and then turns into logo and MTV uses motion graphics in countless ways, even throughout the videos). We can conceptualize and design motion graphics or title sequences from scratch, or under the direction of the client, whichever they prefer.

On-set Visual Effects Supervision:

Is it 24 or 120 fps?,
Can I move the camera, ?
Hold on I think you need tracking markers there....
Oops, is it green or blue screen... cut, cut we need a blond !!.
Is this reflection OK? or should I do a "TAKE 2" on this one?

Sound familiar?

Nothing is more important than experience when it comes to making the right call and there is no time to Google your way out…..
We have 2 VFX Supervisors on staff who are available for the shoots. They work directly with the Director and DP to ensure no costly mistakes are made in the shooting process and that you get exactly the effect you are looking for every time .

3D Modeling & Animation:

mmmm Here is the definition:

3D computer graphics (in contrast to 2D computer graphics) are graphics that use a three-dimensional representation of geometric data that is stored in the computer for the purposes of performing calculations and rendering 2D images. Such images may be for later display or for real-time viewing. Despite these differences, 3D computer graphics rely on many of the same algorithms as 2D computer vector graphics in the wire-frame model and 2D computer raster graphics in the final rendered display. In computer graphics software, the distinction between 2D and 3D is occasionally blurred; 2D applications may use 3D techniques to achieve effects such as lighting, and primarily 3D may use 2D rendering techniques. 3D computer graphics are often referred to as 3D models. Apart from the rendered graphic, the model is contained within the graphical data file. However, there are differences. A 3D model is the mathematical representation of any three-dimensional object (either inanimate or living). A model is not technically a graphic until it is visually displayed. Due to 3D printing, 3D models are not confined to virtual space. A model can be displayed visually as a two-dimensional image through a process called 3D rendering, or used in non-graphical computer simulations and calculations.

Compositing:

Let's say after you finished with your shoot, you'll have various plates. Examples:
BG plate
Talent Plate
Particles Plate
Enviromernt plates

Compositing is the art of bringing it all together in a single shot.
Two Door FX takes in consideration all data gathered from the set to compile the shot/s.
Compositing can be very time consuming and costly. In most cases, troubleshooting requires a particular skill and a trained eye to pin point what needs to be corrected.
Two Door FX has a vast experience troubleshooting blind spotted complex visual effects and can quickly make corrections to deliver on time and in budget.

Motion Capture:

Our VFX Supervisor, Diego Torroija, has extensive experience in directing Motion Capture. It is another trick animators use to save time and money in order to get realistic motion. They literally capture the motion of real live actors via the use of markers and a special optical or magnetic system and then apply that motion data to their animated characters in the computer. This is not recommended if the client wants a more “cartoony” feel, as that style benefits from over exaggerated movements rather than realism.

Pre-visualization:

Occasionally we have architectural, military or event planning clients that want low-res 3D versions of buildings or objects that they intend to build but would like to show their clients a realistic version of what it would look like before they plunk down the cash. Attorneys use this technology as well these days in order to recreate crime scenes or crashes.

Animatics:

These are essentially 3D storyboards designed to help our VFX Supervisor, Director and DP plan how to tackle an expensive shot prior to the shoot. This is an invaluable tool because it is inexpensive and easily alterable, and lets you see right away whether something is going to work or not.

Please keep our contact information for future projects. Thank you for your time and have a wonderful day.
