MERMAIDS! Underwater Motion Capture

Two Door FX finished the first under water motion capture shoot ever. Brad Fuller, the producer/director, was generous enough to let us use his home/pool for the shoot. We shot with 2 red Cams at 3k resolution with varying frame rates (24) and 60 FPS. The clients (Falcon Tree House) were very nice guys with a tremendous vision and scope. The motion capture was done by triangulating the two cameras and using a new Real Time rotoscope technology, in combination with tracking markers.

Why Nikon?

Why Nikon?

Diego has been using Nikon cameras ever since the D100 was released and has
been loyal to the brand ever since. What he loves about Nikon is the extra
level of quality and the special attention to design. Specifically he loves
how the glass looks and has wanted to stay with the brand that supports that
level of quality. He also appreciates how Nikon seems to be very
conscientious of the professional, going out of their way to create products
that suit very specific purposes such as cameras that perform well in very
low light. He loves how the buttons are ergonomically placed – that it feels
like playing an instrument. Oh and he loves the software that comes with it,
that it features easy ways to pull data from the sensor.
His history of using Nikon goes like this:
D100 – his first SLR camera – He used it professionally to shoot what became
textures for the games he was animating (particularly Black Hawk Down) – and
then also recreationally for personal use
D200 – He bought it as soon as it came out – he liked the larger sensor and
was wanting to shoot more action shots like BMX biking/skateboarding etc. He
also used it for more textures and Behind The Scenes on a Sea World project
and the movie Robodoc. He also used it to shoot furniture assets in front of
a green screen for Rooms To Go
D300s – He was very excited when this came out – loved the shallow depth of
field and fact that you could use it in low light. Decided to use it to
shoot an original web series written and produced by his wife. It had that
filmic look.
D7000 – He loved the higher frame size and resolution and loved that the
manual functions were very intuitive, able to control the shutter and
aperature. He knew it would be perfect for the music video because it
allowed them to still get amazing footage even though they had to shoot
outdoor with quick set ups and not a lot of control of the lighting. He also
knew he needed a codec that could handle pretty heavy color grading in post
production and he was confident this camera could do it. He was very
pleased. He said he literally opened it out of the box on the set and by the
time the battery was charged the camera was ready to go and they were off
and shooting. It was so easy to use they didn’t even have to look at the
manual. They were able to shoot a couple hours worth of footage in a ½ a
day. Battery life was great. No complaints whatsoever.
